We are now 4 months in 2018 and there are now a lot of smart phones to choose from. With the release of Samsung Galaxy S9 there are quite some options to upgrade from. However, there are still a couple of smart phones that are believed to release in 2018 and this may not be a good time to upgrade because the upcomming Oneplus 6 Specifications are definitely ruined other smart phones.
To determine whether waiting for the upcoming phones is worth it, we put 100s of hours looking at the smart phones that are to release this year. We looked at the rumored specs, battery life and other features that are promised to deliver for different mobile phones and found an interesting candidate – the OnePlus 6.
OnePlus 6 is expected to release between May and June and the anticipated specs are overwhelming. After several hours of research and looking through the predicted specifications we decided to review OnePlus 6 which we believe is the best smart phone of 2018.
While reviewing the OnePlus 6 we took the following into consideration:- the official announced specs, the rumored features and the performance of its predecessor OnePlus 5T.
OnePlus has always produced an amazing design for their phones. The OnePlus 3, 3T, and 5 had almost the same identical design. The OnePlus 5T had a slightly different design which was in no sense bad. OnePlus 6, however, will have a design totally unlike its predecessors.
This also implies that it will embrace a bottom chin as well since every phone featuring the notch also has the bottom chin. The notch and chin however will be smaller than what we usually observe in smart phones as we have seen in the concept design.
The phone will have a glass rear, dual cameras and a fingerprint scanner. The camera model will now be vertical with the finger print reader just below.
The front of the phone seems identical to that of Vivo V9, which is another Chinese smart phone. The revealed handset has a thickness of 7.5mm and weighs around 175g.
Previously, there were some rumors that the notification LED might not be present as the pictures revealed officially showed OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6 in side to side comparison. However, it was clarified recently that it might not be the case; the notification LED will be present.
The basic design however, shown in the leaked images, could just be for one of their few designs. As we saw earlier for OnePlus 5T, that it had multiple designs.
The screen size was previously rumored to be in between 6.2” and 6.3” but by further clarification we got to know that it is going to be about 6.28”. This is not a surprise as the OnePlus 5T already boasts a screen size of 6.02” and OnePlus has always aimed for better when going for their newer handsets.
OnePlus claims that this handset will have one of the biggest screens ever seen in smart phones, however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the size of the handset might be big as well.
The screen to body ratio as revealed by the leaked pictures will be 90% resulting in a bigger screen without an increase in the size of the actual handset.
The leaks also a list a display of 2280 x 1080 with a PPI of 401 to 402 which is similar to OnePlus 5T. The PPI is quite less in comparison to its current rival Samsung Galaxy S9 which has around 529 PPI.
But the display of OnePlus 5T still had an amazing and beautiful display; the colors are vivid and vibrant. With the OnePlus 6 aiming for the better we can assume that the display will be as sharp as its predecessor.
As far as how the notch will be implemented, Carl Pei said “How big a notch always depends on your choices as a company,” he said.
“What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen. Our notch, it will be there. It’ll be bigger than the Essential Phone and smaller than the iPhone”.
It was also revealed that an update to turn off the notch will be available when the phone comes out.
To determine the camera performance we first looked at the OnePlus 5T. The camera result rivaled that of Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 2, Galaxy S8 and S9 although the experience was nowhere as good. The lightning features were kind of comparable to iPhone X when it came to taking pictures in low light.
The camera specs that are currently guaranteed right now are a front camera with 20MP sensor and f/2.0 aperture, and the dual cameras having 20MP + 16 MP with f/1.7 aperture on both of them. These specs are somewhat similar to that of OnePlus 5T.
An upgrade to the camera, thanks to the handset’s new powerful processor, will be the possible feature of 4k/60fps video capturing and also 960fps/720p slow motion video capturing capability. These features are bound to rival the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the S9+.
The OnePlus 6 features the most recent Qualcomm chipset and SnapDragon 845 processor, which is currently the second best processor built for an android device.
The fastest processor right now would be the Exynos 9810 which was manufactured by Samsung for Samsung and is utilized by S9 and the S9+. However, this doesn’t necessarily put the OnePlus 6 in a second spot in terms of performance.
It was revealed that OnePlus 6 will run a version of OxygenOS based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Due to the processor’s capabilities this smart phone will feature 4k/60fps video capturing too.
This is quite an upgrade from the OnePlus 5T which supported 4k/30fps video and featured the SnapDragon 835 processor. The SnapDragon 845 also slightly outperforms Apple’s A9.
The OnePlus 5T had two variants, available with 6GB and 8GB of RAM. This gives 8GB version of OnePlus 5T an upper hand, over the Samsung Galaxy S9 which is available with 6GB of RAM, in terms of memory.
OnePlus 6 shares the same memory specs as the OnePlus 5T as we have seen in the leaked images. This will make the OnePlus 6 the world’s most powerful smart phone when it comes out.
The OnePlus 5T had 64GB and 128GB storage for each of their variants. The OnePlus 6 will be quite an upgrade in this prospect. It will come with 128GB and 256GB storage, each for their baseline and high-end variant.
This also gives the OnePlus 6 an edge over the Samsung Galaxy S9 which comes with only 64GB storage.
Currently there are many features being promised to us right now but some of these are guaranteed to be available. First of there is the feature of wireless charging which we have not seen in a OnePlus phone before.
The wireless charging feature puts it up in the competition with the top notch phones currently available in the market right now such as the S9.
Secondly, there is the feature of navigation gesture recognition. This is not surprising as the OnePlus 5T already had this feature. However in interview with The Verge it was revealed that if iPhone X had not gone for the navigation gesture recognition, the OnePlus 6 wouldn’t have this feature either.
Moving on to the third feature which is the Dash Charge, which promises “a day’s power in half an hour”. This feature has been available in OnePlus handsets since OnePlus 3.
As the OnePlus 6 promises to improvement, it is inevitable that this feature will be implemented in a much better way. This will be supported by Qualcomm’s quick charge technology.
The sound quality on OnePlus handsets has always been remarkable. OnePlus 3T outperformed Galaxy S7, in terms of amp, and had a slightly less performance than that of HTC 10.
It produced a cleaner output while maintaining 24-bit playback. Similarly, the OnePlus 5T produced a much better output maintaining 32-bit playback. The sound quality of OnePlus 5T gave a tough challenge to Galaxy S8.
So far what we are aware of right now in terms of sound is that it will feature a 3.5mm audio jack. Much is anticipated in terms of audio quality when it comes to OnePlus 6 in general.
The OnePlus 5T had a 3300 mAh battery and it could last throughout a whole day on a single charge. Even when the handset was used for several hours straight and the battery depleted to the point where it required charging, the Dash Charge feature was there to make up for it.
OnePlus 6 is rumored to have a 3450 mAh battery which is a slight upgrade from the OnePlus 5T. Although the battery life 50 mAh less than that of Samsung Galaxy S9, we believe that OnePlus 6 will have a good battery life.
The OnePlus 5T had an impressive battery life and OnePlus 6 has 150mAh more than it. These specs are similar to Oppo R15 which is no surprise since OnePlus flagships are similar to Oppo, as the companies are linked.
Battery life has always been the strength of OnePlus mobiles and we believe that the OnePlus 6 will prove one of the best in 2018.
This is currently the strongest factor that leads us to believe that OnePlus 6 will be the best handset we have seen thus far. The OnePlus6 will feature Qualcomm’s SnapDragon 845 processor and will come with 6GB and 8GB RAM just like its predecessor.
The baseline variant will feature a storage of 128GB and the high end variant will feature a storage of 256GB.To test out the overall performance of the phone, we needed a benchmark.
Fortunately there were some leaked images which showed that OnePlus 6 had an Antutu score of 276,510 which is currently the highest we have ever observed in a smart phone. This obliterates the benchmarks of S9 and iPhone X which have Antutu scores of 242,789 and 226,058.
Although the real benchmarks will be unveiled when the phone comes out, we can claim that this will be the fastest mobile phone to ever exist thanks to its processor and RAM.
We have noted that OnePlus prices have increased year by year and to be honest it wouldn’t be surprising if the OnePlus 6 has a price of more than $600. The OnePlus 5T had a price of $500 and considering that the OnePlus 6 is a significant upgrade the price expectations seem fair.
The price however is still less than its competitors, the iPhone X and Galaxy S9. An android smart phone with these specifications would probably be around $800-$1000 and OnePlus 6 is quite cheap in comparison. Thus the pricing is also a strong point of the Samsung Galaxy S9.
OnePlus has always released two handsets every year, one being released early around June and the other around late November. But there are no news on OnePlus X2.
The OnePlus 6 will, however, come out in early April. Evidence shows that OnePlus has run out of stock of the OnePlus 5T in the US and Europe and needs to start selling a phone to replace the 5T. This is where our OnePlus 6 arrives!
OnePlus handsets have always delivered quality and performance in low price. The latest handset, OnePlus 5T, was a beast for its price mark. The OnePlus 6 seems a pretty good choice if one is willing to spend around $600-$700. For that price mark you are getting to experience a performance worth $800-$1000.
The only downside to this mobile phone, I believe, is its camera where the OnePlus has always lacked. Even so, the other specifications and special features of the handset fulfills the spots where it lacks making it one of a kind.
The handset is a decent upgrade and if you are looking to buy a mobile phone within the respective price range, its worth the wait.
